Then book yourself on to a FREE PBS course, brought to you by the Portsmouth PBS Network.
This is a two day course. The first day focuses on teaching the participants about the philosophy of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) which is a framework for supporting people with a learning disability to have a good quality of life and thus not need to rely on behaviours of concern to get their needs met. The second day of the course focuses on teaching participants how to practically implement the philosophy including communication, active support and understanding behaviour. The training is available to all persons supporting people with learning disabilities, whether they be family carers or paid carers. The course is delivered by Portsmouth’s Intensive Support Team.

This is a four day course. Ideally participants will have already attended the Awareness and Next Steps or an equivalent. The course is designed to assist participants in leading others to implement good quality Positive Behaviour Support, using a practice leadership approach.
Participants may be family members of people with learning disabilities, who wish to fine tune their ability to monitor the care and support their loved one is receiving from a paid service and to assist them in working in partnership with paid providers to get the support right. Participants may also be paid carers, who wish to create or enhance the culture of Positive Behaviour Support within the service they work.
Once the 4 day course is completed, attendees are encouraged to attend virtual bi-monthly PBS Leads forums, which cover: sharing good practice, peer supervision and a specific PBS topic of discussion. The training and forums are facilitated by Penny Vanderplank (Behaviour Analyst) and Jenna Szymanski (IST Manager/Senior LD Nurse).

Our first annual conference was held on 20th October 2023. We were so excited to see the conference sell out in a matter of weeks. This cemented our belief that the people of Portsmouth are interested in becoming a part of the community of practice. The day was full of good practice stories from current PBS Leads, parents and guest speakers. Please take a look at the videos and resources from this years conference. Hopefully they will whet your appetite for the next celebration event!!
